Mongolia has been chosen to
host a study to seek to prevent the further decline in the numbers of
the world’s snow leopards.
A declining population places
snow leopards at only 3,500 to 7,000 worldwide. With 1,000 snow leopards,
Mongolia has the world’s second largest snow leopard population after
China.
Working in cooperation with
the Mongolian government, the Snow Leopard Trust will use remote cameras
and genetic monitoring to learn about snow leopards in a ten year study.
"Although there have been
several valuable studies of the species to date, most were short-term,
or at most four or five years in duration, and such short-term efforts
simply cannot provide the understanding we need to conserve these cats,"
Tom McCarthy, the trust's conservation director, said in statement.
In an unusual move, the Snow
Leopard Trust will pay volunteers to track snow leopards in western
Mongolia this summer.
