A South Korean non-profit organization
is studying whether to send 40,000 coal burning furnaces for use in
Ulaanbaatur.
The Korea Mine Reclamation
Corp. (MIRECO), a publicly run non-profit organization, is conducting
a study to determine the feasibility of introducing the furnaces in
Mongolia.
"The state-run Korea International
Cooperation Agency has been requested by the Mongolian government to
provide the stoves, and asked MIRECO to check if such a step would be
beneficial to users," said a spokesman.
"Emphasis will be placed
on determining the seriousness of pollution, actual prices of coal briquets
and production capability in the country, and whether or not residents
like using coal to fuel their stoves," he added.
It is hoped using coal furnaces
could help reduce pollutants currently released by fuels used in Ulaanbaatur.
Often, materials such as low-quality coal, auto tires and other inexpensive
fuels are burned, which release high levels of pollutants.
The cost of the 40,000 coal
furnaces would be $2 million.
