The American telecommunications
giant, AT&T, has announced it will invest over $1 billion in 2008
to bring enhanced telephone, video and general internet services to
Mongolia, as well as other countries.
Mongolian businesses and consumers
should expect to see faster data transmission along the country’s
internet lines. This, in part, will be due to the increased installation
of undersea fiber optic computer cables.
The scope of the new AT&T
program appears to be a dramatic leap in infrastructure improvements
over past years.
Explaining the program, AT&T
said in a written statement, “The 2008 program -- which is 33 per
cent more than last year's enterprise investment and more than double
AT&T's investment in 2006 – is being driven by demand for Internet
Protocol (IP) networks and services as companies deal with the explosive
surge in data, voice and video traffic made possible by the proliferation
of high speed networks and devices worldwide.”
