LandmineMongolia attended the recently concluded workshop on implementing the international Landmine Ban Treaty.

Held in Bali, the conference reviewed activities to destroy landmines among member states as well as to prevent the use of these weapons in the future.

Member states told of activities to destroy landmine stockpiles, mine clearance, victim assistance, reporting, and national legislation to implement the treaty.

As an example of the seriousness of the problem, Indonesia reported that it currently has some 16,500 mines, and plans to destroy 11,603 by its 4-year treaty deadline.

Mongolia, which is not a signatory to the treaty, attended the conference.

States which have ratified the treaty include Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, the PhilippinesTimor-Leste, and Thailand.
