Mongolia attended the recently
concluded workshop on implementing the international Landmine Ban Treaty.
Held in Bali, the conference
reviewed activities to destroy landmines among member states as well
as to prevent the use of these weapons in the future.
Member states told of activities
to destroy landmine stockpiles, mine clearance, victim assistance, reporting,
and national legislation to implement the treaty.
As an example of the seriousness
of the problem, Indonesia reported that it currently has some 16,500
mines, and plans to destroy 11,603 by its 4-year treaty deadline.
Mongolia, which is not a signatory
to the treaty, attended the conference.
States which have ratified
the treaty include Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada,
Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, the PhilippinesTimor-Leste, and Thailand.
