Top Mongolian officials to be present at Beijing Olympics
Tuesday, 08 April 2008
Mongolian officials will attend
the opening ceremonies at the Beijing summer Olympics.
Both Mongolian President N.
Enkhbayar and Prime Minister S. Bayar will travel to Beijing for the
event. This is seen as a welcome decision by China, which faces increasing
criticism for its handling of unrest in Tibet.
In recent days, French President
Nicolas Sarkozy has urged world leaders to boycott the opening Olympic
ceremonies in protest over China’s handling of Tibet and their record
on human rights issues.
Mongolian officials, however,
stress that they have hosted the Tibetan opposition leader, the Dali
Lama, on a number of occasions despite protests from China.
Officials further mentioned
that Mongolia has significant historical and spiritual ties to Tibet.
