Mongolia-Russia to discuss expanding nuclear cooperation PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 April 2008

ImageMongolia may invite Russia to assist in the mining and processing of uranium, according to Prime Minister S. Bayar. Additionally, Mongolia may even seek a Russian partnership in building a nuclear power plant.

Speaking to the Itar-Tass news agency on Wednesday prior to leaving for Moscow for an officials state visit Bayar said, "As early as in Soviet times much work was done for the prospecting of uranium deposits, and now the time has come for using that information for mutual advantage." Bayar said.

While in Moscow, the Mongolian Prime Minister is also planning on meeting with Sergei Kiriyenko, head of the Federal Agency for Atomic Energy (Rosatom).

Observers are quick to point out that while Mongolia may be appearing to develop nuclear relations with Russia, they have made similar overtures to Japan and France, both of which have uranium projects underway in Mongolia.
