Vatican announces new representative to Mongolia PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 April 2008
ImageMongolia, which may be the country with the world’s smallest Catholic population, has a new representative of the Vatican.

It was announced last week that Archbishop Asvaldo Padilla will become the new Apostolic Nunzio in Mongolia. A Fillipino, Archbishop Padilla took over the Mongolian responsibilities when he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to South Korea.

Catholic church publications estimate the number of Catholics in Mongolia at 415, with 70 baptisms occurring in 2007.

The church also sponsors 64 missioners from 18 countries working in Mongolia. Additionally, there are six lay missioners working in the country.

There are two Catholic parishes in Ulaabaatar, Saints Peter and Paul, and Saint Mary's, Good Shepherd. A third parish, Mary Help of Christians, is located in Mongolia’s second largest city, Darhan.
