 Mongolian President Nambaryn
Enkhbayar met Friday with newly elected Russian President Dmitry Medvedev
in Moscow. Elected in May, this is Medvedev’s second visit with a
foreign dignitary.
The two Presidents discussed
a wide range of issues from increasing business ties to Mongolian participation
regional security organizations.
A Kremlin official told Itar-Tass
that the parties at the Friday talks would focus on cooperation in northeastern
Asia and central Asia.
“Russia would welcome intensified
activities of Mongolia as an observer in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization
and active use of the possibilities of the organization to promote business
cooperation with Russia, China, Kazakhstan and other SCO members,”
a Kremlin official told the Itar-Tass news agency.
The spokesmen said modernizing
the Mongolian rail system, a critical component in delivering Mongolia’s
mineral wealth to Russia, was also a topic for discussion.
Referring to Mongolia’s energy
wealth, the Kremlin official said, “There will also be a detailed
talk on the issue of joint initiatives in the mining industry in Mongolia.
Russian business circles, represented by major corporations – Basic
Element, Renova, Severstal, Rosatom, Polymetall, Gazprombank – display
an interest in investment projects in Mongolia, mostly in the production
of such mineral resources, as coal, copper, silver and uranium,” he
said.
Also while in Moscow, President
Enkhbayar will receive an honorary degree from the Gorky Literary Institute,
which he graduated from in 1980.
He will also meet with Sergei
Mironov, speaker of the Federation council upper house of the Russian
parliament.
