American grandmother arrives in Mongolia as Peace Corps volunteer

A 65-year-old American grandmother
has arrived in Mongolia to work, for the next two years, as an American
Peace Corps volunteer.
Judy Gates, of Marblehead,
Massachusetts, said she would be assigned to live with a family in rural
Mongolia where she will work. What that work will be, she will learn
later.
However, for her first three
to four months she will study Mongolian in an Ulaanbaatar classroom.
"We all have to figure
out what is meaningful in our lives," she told the New Salem News.
"One of the most important ways to find meaning is by trying to
do things for others. I'll probably gain far more than I give. ... I
don't expect this to be easy. But at my age, I'm ready for a challenge."
Gates signed up for a Peace
Corps program for people over 50 years old. When asked where she would
like to serve, she recalls, "I just thought, 'Send me where
you want me to go. Tell me what you want me to do.'"
She plans to remain in touch
with her children, grandchildren and friends using a computer. She also
has become part of a program, called World Wise Schools, in which she
will regularly report and correspond with her granddaughter’s classroom
in the United States.
