Japanese experiments with special rice seed for harsh Mongolian climate PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 June 2008
ImageA Japanese scientist has planted specially modified rice seeds designed to survive the country’s harsh soil and climate.

Botanist Takashi Oritani planted his rice on Friday within a four square meter field in Choijumts.

Named “Chingges Gold”, the rice was developed through experimentation on Hokkaido Isle, Japan’s coldest island.

Preparing the field for rice included flooding it to turn the area into mud ready to accept the rice seeds.

Also, the field will be covered with straw, to protect the seedlings from the weather. However, plastic sheeting will also be added if the temperature drops below minus ten degrees.

Takashi has planted some 350 rice seeds, from which he hopes to yield ten kilos of rice.
