Nearly $80,000 for Mongolian
and Vietnamese children was raised this week by marathon runners covering
250 kilometers in the Gobi Desert. A separate $30,000 was donated to
aid for earthquake victims in China.
Sponsored by RacingThePlanet,
the course took runners through the Kizilisu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture
of China along Mongolia’s southern border.
Runners from the organization,
the Christina Noble Foundation, raised money for Mongolian children
by being sponsored during the marathon.
Some 172 runners from 29 countries
spent thousands of dollars to run through scorching desert. The race
is run in six stages over six days and runners spend their nights in
shared tents along the way.
Of the 173 marathoners, all
but 27 finished. The majority of those who were forced to drop out suffered
from dehydration, blisters and exhaustion, according to officials.
