All 76 seats in the nation’s
parliament were at stake in Sunday’s national elections.
Voting was heavy throughout
the country and expected to top the 82 percent who voted in 2004.
The Mongolian People’s Revolutionary
Party, whose government of Prime Minister Sanjaagiin Bayar currently
controls the parliament, seemed confident that they would remain in
power. The MPRP ruled Mongolia for most of the 20th
century.
Key challenges facing the next
parliament will be bring inflation, now running at 15.1 percent, under
control. Also, the Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mining agreement is expected
to be approved following years of negotiations and delays. Revenues
from the agreement could boost Mongolia’s GDP by as much as 34 percent.
Election results are not expected
before Monday, at the earliest.
