Mongolia Web News - In the Mongolian elections the ruling MPRP has
claimed victory. The party has spread documents claiming they have
secured 44 seats out of 76 in State Great Khural (parliament). In the
documents the Democratic Party would have 21 seats and 3 others are
assigned to smaller parties. 8 seats are unaccounted for, as yet.
The Mongolian People’s Revolutionary
Party, whose government of Prime Minister Sanjaagiin Bayar currently
controls the parliament, seemed confident that they would remain in
power. The MPRP ruled Mongolia for most of the 20th
century.
Key challenges facing the next
parliament will be bring inflation, now running at 15.1 percent, under
control. Also, the Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mining agreement is expected
to be approved following years of negotiations and delays. Revenues
from the agreement could boost Mongolia’s GDP by as much as 34 percent.
