MPRP wins 41 of 76 seats in Parliament PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 01 July 2008

ImageResults from Saturday’s national elections show the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party winning 41 of the 76 seats in parliament.

This assures the continuation of Prime Minister B.Sanjaa’s government.

"According to preliminary results of the election ... there is a strong probability that the MPRP has won an absolute majority in the parliament," Sanjaa told the Associated Press. "The MPRP would like to co-operate with all political forces and independent candidates."

The opposition Mongolian Democratic Party tallied 25 seats in the next parliament and one seat went to an independent candidate.

More than 350 candidates from 12 parties and one coalition ran candidates for seats in parliament. Unofficial voting totals show 74 percent of the nation’s 1.5 million voters cast ballots.
