Political parties meet to seek formula for addressing rioting
Monday, 07 July 2008
As of Sunday, talks between
Mongolia’s political parties had failed to find a formula for addressing
grievances that led to last week’s riots. However, the talks are scheduled
to continue on Monday.
Rioting following national
elections left five people dead last Tuesday and saw fires set in buildings,
including the headquarters of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party.
The talks began after the national
state of emergency was lifted at midnight Saturday.
"All the issues are still
under discussion and the meeting is postponed until tomorrow morning,"
Yondon Otgonbayar, secretary general of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary
Party, told the AFP news agency.
Many complaints have been heard
about irregularities in the election, which allowed the Mongolian People's
Revolutionary Party to maintain control of the government.
"They are coming up with
a list of constituencies where political parties want to have a recount
or a revote, and a list of complaints and irregularities they want to
solve," Foreign Minister Sanjaasuren Oyun said.
