The Asia Foundation, which sent observers to monitor Mongolia’s recent national elections, has released data regarding the election. In all, 34 representatives from The Asia Foundation fanned out throughout the country to observe election procedures.

The report notes that over 1.5 million citizens voted, representing 70 percent of all eligible voters. Some 356 candidates were on ballots to fill seats in the parliament. Of these, 12 political parties were represented while 45 candidates ran as independents, without party endorsements.

Observers watched for irregularities at polling stations. They reported finding no election problems at 94 percent of the stations they visited. At six percent, they saw incidents of individuals trying to influence voters. Monitors said most of these incidents occurred in the Bayanzurkh district, and involved middle-aged adults.

Final election results showed the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party won 39 seats in the 76-seat Great Hural.  The main opposition Democratic Party won 25 seats, two seats were won by smaller parties and ten disputed seats are involved in recounts.
