The parliament of
Mongolia on Thursday rejected the motion to impeach the government
issued by the opposition leader Ts. Elbegdorj of the Democratic Party.Votes were cast by the Standing Committee on State Issue with 9 against and 6 in favor of the motion.
The Democratic Party accused the
government, led by the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP),
of failing to take effective measures to appease post-election riots in
the capital Ulaanbaatar, thus causing casualties and damage to property.
The MPRP said during the session of
parliament that the government would not take responsibility for the
incident until the investigation into the riots was over. Some smaller opposition groups requested resignation of Minister of Internal Affairs and Justice Mr. Munkh-Orgil as well as the Chairman of the General Election Committee.
The MPRP and the Democratic Party,
the two biggest parties in the current parliament, won at least 39 and 25 seats
respectively in the 76-member parliament in elections held on June 29 with 10 seats still up in the air.
On July 1, supporters of the
Democratic Party and other parties marched in protest against alleged
voting fraud in the elections, and the protests turned into riots, in
which five people were killed and more than 300 injured.
The Mongolian General Committee of
Election declared on Monday the final results of 66 seats with the
remaining 10 seats in dispute, which had been submitted to Mongolian
President Nambaryn Enkhbayar.
The first session of the new parliament will be held before July 29.
