Officials figures released Friday indicate that losses at the Fine Art Gallery following the July 1 riots may take decades to restore, according to officials.

Rioters in Ulaanbaatar burned the gallery on July 1 and officials, who had been working to salvage that art not destroyed, have now begun assessing their losses.

Total losses following the riots show 926 paintings were destroyed along with 250 sculptures. Fire destroyed nearly the entire 1,500 square meter gallery.

The dollar amount of the losses has been set at 1.6 billon MNT, which comes to just below $1.4 million.

The Fine Art Gallery has only two staff members trained in restoring art. Officials believe that without international assistance it will take at least a decade to restore the artwork that was salvaged from the fire.
