World Health Organization again warns Asia about spread of drug-resistant TB PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 July 2008
ImageOn Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that Asian nations, including Mongolia, have failed to stop the growth of the deadly drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis (TB).

The WHO stressed that the disease could soon pose a serious threat to the entire Asian region, putting the health of millions at risk.

The WHO regional office in the Western Pacific Region stated that just 1% of the 150,000 people who have contracted the multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) have received proper treatment.

Nations at highest risk include Mongolia, the South Korea, China, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

The WHO noted that the majority of these nations lack the proper tools to detect the bacteria, and do not take appropriate actions even when diagnosed.

The strain of TB is so infectious, said experts, that a single person often infects up to ten others.
