Parties negotiating return of Democratic Party to Parliament PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 04 August 2008

Clarifying elections results from the controversial June 30 parliamentary elections, B.Battulga, Chairman of the General Election Committee, has said “As a result of parliamentary election, Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party captured 39 seats, the Democratic Party has won 25 seats, the Civil Will Party took one seat, and an independent candidate has one seat.’’

While international observers have declared Mongolia’s parliamentary election to have appeared free and fair, many voters continue to voice doubts about the election’s overall fairness.

Post-election riots in Ulaanbaatar resulted in five deaths as four people were shot to death during the riot, and one died of asphyxiation inside the headquarters of the ruling Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party.

Also, Ch.Amarbold, Chief Officer of the General Police Department, said 13 people remain unaccounted for.

Amidst the many rumours heard since the rioting, both the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party and Democratic party have been suspected of backing the July 1 riots.

Even one month later, the new members of State Great Khural have not been able to be sworn in. By law, the Mongolian Parliament needs a quorum of 57 members to carry out business. While 66 new MPs were certified as elected, the opposition Democratic Party was able to order its 25 MPs to walk out of parliament during its first session, thus preventing the members of parliament and government ministers from being sworn in.

Further, Democratic Party members declared they have many questions about the decisions made before and after elections by the General Election Committee. Also, Democratic Party and the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party are now negotiating on nine issues prior to the Democratic Party returning to Parliament. So far, reports indicate the group has agreed on seven issues and remain far apart on the remaining two issues. An MPRP representative has also said one of the issues remains impossible to compromise on. It is unclear about continuing progress on these negotiations. However, Mongolian President N. Enhbayar has requested both sides to quickly conclude the negotiations.

As a foreign investor I will not get involved in Mongolian politics, that I will leave to those who are eligible to vote.
As a resident of Mongolia, the country that I love to be in, I do worry however about the fact that the country cannot be government because the parliament members cannot be sworn in.
The world economy is changing rapidly, see for example to world food and energy prices rise incredibly.
To address these and many other important issues the country needs to be government and politicians should take their responsibility to do so! The Mongolian people deserve better!

The Democratic party is just wasting everyone's time just to prove a point.

Thats right! Who really cares which party takes office since either one is going to keep stealing all the money and dealing in bribes so they can keep their family fat over seas while driving in thier big vehicles. It's just all a waste. The only point proven from all this was how quickly a criminal government can shut down the media and kill its citizens. Well, only shut down the media that is not favorable to them I guess. Just watch what you say and turn a blind eye to their theft and abuse of power and no body has to get hurt or silenced. It really was a wast of time for the democrats, the citizens and all involved to voice their outrage. They have kept it bottled for so many years now so whats wrong with keeping it surpressed for so many more. Just have a bottle of vodka and all yoru cares and concerns for getting screwed over by the govenrment will go away. Drink, use lots of credit and be hapy with what you get. As for those outside investors, they are ok with whatever comes about so long as their investment doesnt get hurt. The government could rob the country clean so long as their investment looks good. So drink more Vodka, the govenrment and thier friends who monopolize it's production will be glad to make more while controlling your natural resources through the disguise of an open economy. Anyway, you dont have a choice. Be corrupt like them or be poor and humbled to serve their needs. Soon you will get to be just like all the rest of the mis-developing countries who stumbled thier way through mis-guided capitalism. transition.
