Mongolian Tourism up 14% in 2008 |

According to official sources Mongolia is having a record
tourism year in 2008.Tourism has increased by 14
percent over 2007, sayto officials in the Ministry of Roads,
Transportation and Tourism. From January through July 2008,
some 24,900 tourists have visited the country. The ministry has set
a goal of reaching 50,000 tourists before the end of the year.
Ministry officials noted that
additional tourists entered the country to observe the solar eclipse
earlier this month. Some tour operators, however, have experienced a slower year than was anticipated especially in the period before July. Strict visa rules set by China has limited the amount of people who have undertaken the Trans Mongolian Railway. Some people doubt the official ministry numbers as they might included large numbers of Chinese workers that come on tourist visas to avoid high fees for business visas.
