After one month delay, Parliament members finally sworn in PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 29 August 2008
ImageFollowing a one-month delay, the Mongolian parliament was sworn in on Thursday.

The first session of the newly elected parliament was canceled on July 23 prior to members being sworn in when the opposition Democratic Party walked out, thus preventing the parliament from having a quorum.

Democratic Party members had alleged vote fraud had occurred during the June 30 national elections.

Also, the opposition lawmakers were responding to rioting that took place in Ulaanbaatur on the nights following elections. Five people had been killed during the disorder.

However, at the conclusion of wide ranging negotiations, the opposition Democratic Party and the majority Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) have agreed to reforming the legislative process and focusing more resources on social programs during this upcoming session of Parliament.
