Mongolian officials gathered
last week for the unveiling of a 40 meter high statue of Chinggis Khaan
on horseback in Tsonjin Boldog in Erdene soum of Tuv province last week.
The statue is part of a complex
of buildings built by architect D.Erdenebileg. The complex sits on the
site where history says Chinggis Khaanfirst found the horsewhip in 1177
that would point him on his way to building an empire.
D.Erdenebileg said much of
the sponsorship for the program came from the assistance of MP Kh.Battulga.
"If he had not supported the idea and not helped in its actualization,
all our plans would have stayed in our mind," says Erdenebileg.
Surrounding the statue are
36 columns. Also, visitors may go to the top of the statue top view
the surrounding countryside.

During the Stalinist purges of the 1930's almost every monastery in Mongolia was destroyed. In 1979 an atlas was published in Ulaanbaatar by Mr. Rinchen with an overview of more than 900 religious sites that used to exist in Mongolia. However a lot the information listed seems to be not accurate. A research has been initiated to get a better idea of all the buddhist buildings that once stood in Mongolia.
