Parliament has voted, for the
time being, to maintain subsidies provided to Mongolia’s cashmere-producing
goat herders.
After herders complained of
falling world cashmere prices, Parliament agreed, last August, to spend
up to $8.6 million to purchase unsold cashmere.
Additionally, subsidies were
to be provided to herders based upon the number of goats per herdsman
and on the basis of the livestock census conducted at the end of 2007.
Some members of Parliament
urged an end to the subsidies, claiming they fueled inflation. These
included MPs L. Gundalai, Z. Altai, L. Gantumur, Ch. Saikhanbileg and
Terbishdagva.
However, when brought to the
floor, the measure to continue discussing the cashmere subsidies passed
27 to 20, assuring the continuation of the subsidies.
