The government has announced
plans to construct a major cross-city road through Ulaanbaatar.
The 17.5 km. highway will skirt
the Bogd Khan Mountain in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion. Also,
the new road will necessitate the construction of a suspension bridge
running east and west in Ulaanbaatar.
Officials say Ulaanbaatar has
about 400 kilometers of paved roads, built from the 1960s to 1980s,
with the ability to handle 40,000 to 50,000 vehicles per day.
