On Saturday October 22 US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, 73, coming
from South Korea and China, paid his first official visit to Mongolia, invited
by Defence Minister Ts. Sharavdorj.
In his four hours on the ground, he first met Mongolian Defence Minister
Ts. Sharavdorj and discussed defence cooperation. Ts. Sharavdorj presented him
with a fast horse, which Rumsfeld named Montana.
Rumsfeld said, “As a free nation, with a free political system and a free
economic system, you have contributed to the liberation of 50 million people.
People who will have lives that will be notably different than they otherwise
would have been.”
“In Iraq and Afghanistan the Mongolian army has demonstrated that it is a
force worthy of pride and emulation. You have contributed to significant
improvements in the lives of the citizens of those two countries.”
