The United States will provide
Mongolia with up to $700,000 to participate in programs to capture and
sell methane gas.
Operating through the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, the Methane to Markets partnership
offers Mongolia the opportunity to develop businesses to capture escaping
methane gas from coal mines and from herds of cattle.
The grant money is to be used
to purchase equipment and train staff in the capturing and reselling
of methane gas.
U.S. officials note that by
2015 the methane program has the potential to annually reduce methane
emissions by 50 million metric tons of carbon gases– comparable to
planting 55 million acres of trees or recovering 500 billion cubic feet
of natural gas.
