UB Post reports: Chief of the General Customs Office Kh.Baatar, Chief of Selenge aimag’s customs office M.Damba, and B.Ovgonkhuu, an assistant to Deputy Premier Ch.Ulaan, were arrested on charges of corruption on October 28, in a night raid conducted by police and intelligence services.

Around 10 p.m., police forces raided Baatar’s office and found US$500,000 in cash in his safe. The police confiscated his computers and any files with potentially incriminating documents. Some papers included banking documents from Swiss banks, to which he allegedly might have transferred his money. Baatar is accused of bribery, misuse and overuse of his authority, importation of a large number of goods without customs tax, and involvement in organized crime. “Struggling with corruption is the work that all public officials and all levels of society must do. I’m Prime Minister of this country. I’m not a prosecutor or a police officer. I will support work for legal justice. I will stand to interrupt any violations of the law,” said Ts.Elbegdorj in a press conference Monday. Some customs officials, including customs chief of the Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport S.Otgonpurev, were questioned last week in relation to the case, as were Baatar’s driver and secretary, several inspectors and some businessmen. Some police officials said Baatar had come to the secret service’s attention during the last few months.
