The Mongolian Defense Ministry held a farewell ceremony on Monday
for more than 100 troops who are to take over the country's
peacekeeping mission in Iraq. Mongolia remains strong military ties with the US, that were strenghened by a visit of President Bush to Mongolia in November 2005. The US has been promoting and facilitating Mongolian participation into UN Missions in Iraq. This was the sixth batch of peacekeeping forces sent by
Mongolia to Iraq. The troops will be charged with patrol tasks in the
Iraqi capital Baghdad to help maintain the social order there. They had received a month of training at home, and will stay inIraq for six months.
At the request of the United States, Mongolia dispatched its
first batch of 173 troops to help boost the peacekeeping and
reconstruction efforts in post-war Iraq in September 2003.
