Mongolia's Mobile Phone War PDF Print E-mail

Until recently Mongolia had two big mobile phone service companies. One of them is Mobicom Corporation which is run by GSM system technology, the other one is Skytel based on Korean CDMA technology. Recently a new competitor came to the market, a local company called CityPhone, that has forced the two big brothers to review their rates.

The  Mongolian-Japanese joint venture Mobicom Corporation, the first operator and broadcasted mobile phone service in Mongolia,  is operating since March 1996. Their network is by far the largest in country. Currently, the Mobicom mobile network extends to 106 locations, including all 21 province capitals and major settlements. They have many types of services, including the prepaid Mobicard and post paid services as 9911. As part of the 10th anniversary of Mobicom Corporation has since, March 1, 2006 reduced phone call value. Before March,1,  prepaid  service users paid 132 MNT per minute, now it’s reduced to 75 MNT.
Both Mobicom and Skytel announced their "clip" or "call id" service will be free of charge from April 1.
