Mongol Messenger reports:
Construction has begun of a tourism and Buddhism complex near to Tasgan ovoo. The complex will be in a commanding position atop the hill behind the Geser monastery, across from Bakula’s temple, on the boundary between Bayangol and Chingeltei districts. It will comprise a temple with a 12-metre granite sitting Buddha statue, a museum, religious school, gallery and parking for 500 vehicles, with a bridge over the present road dividing the two hills. The whole complex will covers about 13ha, 6ha for buildings and 7ha of greenery, and will cost over Tg10 billion, planned for completion in 2009. Lamas of Gandan and other monasteries used to meet at Tasgan for discussions and debates. The area was also called Zaanii Khoshuu (elephant’s trunk) because of its shape, stretching from the MRTV ger district southwards. When the hill was divided so that a road could be put in the cutting, many locals were unhappy because the elephant’s trunk was cut in two; there is some local pleasure that a bridge will now reunite the two parts of the trunk.
