Mongolia's SAPU Victims Continue to Argue With Altjin Group PDF Print E-mail

The Mongolian Altjin Corporation continues to argue with the SAPU trade center fire victims.

On April 30, a group of 20 SAPU victims went to Altjin’s office to demand the money that G. Altan promised them last week. The victims have been fighting to be reimbursed for their lost goods for over four months and last week it appeared that a deal had been struck. Altan, general director of the Altjin Group, told the hunger striking SAPU victims that she had raised Tg4 billion in order to repay the traders. She paid the hunger strikers on site in cash, and reportedly gave money to approximately 170 victims, which leaves 500 unaccounted for.

However, now new problems are arising in the exact amount of money that should be reimbursed. Many of the traders were forced to take out loans from the bank during the four months that they were waiting, and now many of them are demanding that they be reimbursed for that money as well. While at the Altjin Group’s office though, the victims were arguing with an assistant and the Director of Public Relations, not anyone with any authority to commit to, or give out money. One of the victims (or possibly a relative) went so far as to hit the assistant for trying to leave the office....
