This morning between 4-5am the Mongolian police were seen breaking down all of the gers on Sukhbaatar square. After taking them all down they threw them into the big
Russian police trucks and took them away. However before the gers were
taken down, the city governors again requested for the protesters to
take down their gers, and told them that if they did not take them down themselves, then police would come to break them down.
Some of the protesters were screaming and crying, however it did not
look like it was a violent situation. While the police broke down the
SAPU victims’ gers, they continued to lay in their blankets in silent
protest. The video showed them sitting on the square, huddled up in
their bedspreads while the snow swirled around them. The police
eventually took all of them away in police vans, some to the police
stations and some to local hospitals.
By 6am this morning all the gers were taken down and all of the
protesters gone from Sukhbaatar square. Approximately 2,000 police
officers were present during the dismantling of the gers.
Tom Terry reports on the Mongolian police violence against Eagle TV reporters:
Eagle TV reporters Batdorj, Bayanbat, and News Director
Orgil were roughed up by police when they tried to video tape the
teardown for the morning news. One police officer repeatedly smashed
his fist into the camera, causing damage significant enough that it no
longer works properly and will have to be sent for repair.
This issue was actually brought up with city officials a few days ago, and with the visit of Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, the Mongolian government and police were eager to clean up Sukhbaatar square.
