Monday, 15 May 2006
Mongolia Web News, Ulaanbaatar. Hilton Hotels Corporation (NYSE:HLT) has announced it will open a hotel in Mongolia. In cooperation with Star Estates Company Ltd. it will start building a hotel in the very center of Ulaanbaatar, near the Children's Park, close to the Peace Bridge. Mongolia has been trying for several years to get an intenrtaional chain of hotels to open a Branch in Mongolia. Earlier the international chain of Shangri-La Hotels tried building a hotel, but these plans - that were developed in cooperation with the local MCS Holding - have been postponed, and instead an office complex will be constructed on the east side of Sukhbaatar Square. Hilton Hotels has nearly 2,700 hotels and 475,000 rooms in more than 80 countries, with 150,000 team members worldwide.

Singapore, 09 May 2006 - Hilton Hotels Corporation, the world's leading hospitality company, and real estate developer Star Estates Company Ltd announced the signing of an agreement for Hilton to manage Hilton Ulaanbaatar, the newest and most lavish hotel development in the heart of Mongolia's capital.

The Hilton Ulaanbaatar will provide 240 spacious and luxurious guestrooms, and four cutting edge restaurants and bars bringing new standards of cuisine and service to the city. Conference and Banqueting facilities will include a 500-seater ballroom and seven meeting rooms.

Who is going to stay in this new hotel when all the mining companies pack their bags and leave?
2 Ulan Batar does not need another big hot

To me it seems that Ulan Batar does not need another big hotel. With the arrival of big-sign international conglomerates such as Hilton the city will lose its appeal as a unique place to visit. Next on line are, perhaps, McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken (!). A worrisome thought. In my opinion, Ulan Batar will benefit more from small-scale hotels, and backpacker and budget travel accomodations. Amara

Hilton Hotels plans to open a branch in Ulaanbaatar stand for much more than just "another big hotel" it's marks the rest of the worlds willingness to invest in a country that to date has generated very little FDI other than in the mining sector, Hilton hotels brings benifits for the Mongolian people in terms of employment, taxes paid and a raising of standards. Not everyone who visits Mongolia carries or wants to carry a backpack. The reason that McDonalds and Strabucks exist everywhere in the world is because they are full of people that want thier products.
If you want to stop progress in Mongolia, then by all means say no to Hilton hotels.
6 We do not need Hilton, hamburgers and co

I do not see any connection between Hilton and "employment, taxes paid and a raising of standards". They are just empty words. Ulan Batar should not turn into another faceless "Westernized city" where ugly big signs (unfortunately, many of them seem to be in English)and billboards hang all over the place. As to McDonalds hamburgers (think about slaughtered cattle and chickens)and Starbucks coffee (think cafeine addiction), we, certainly, do not need any of that in Ulan Batar or elsewhere. We already have enough problems with unhealthy eating habits. Amara

Im English & have always lived in England, so possibly my views are biased, however, In March I decided to visit somewhere completely random, rather than the usual spanish costas & holidays the usual British tourist would go on. I knew nothing about Mongolia thought it sounded very different & so I tried it. When I came, I stayed in Ulan Bator for most of the visit & was pleasantly surprised, I loved everything about it. But I must admit, if I didnt have a Mongolian friend whom I was staying with, I would have felt unsafe. I think if there is a Hilton hotel in Ulan Bator, a lot of travellers more so westerners will recognise the very familiar name of Hilton & be positively encouraged to book & stay there. It has a good reputation & is a worldwide chain anyway. It would encourage a lot more tourism in Ulan Bator & therefore bring more profits to the City, ie...tourists spending money in restaurants, bars, shops & various other things that tourists like to do & it would create capital financial growth for some small struggling businesses in Ulan Bator & therefore, may in time allow these businesses & companies to expand, probably meaning more people will need to be employed..extra work, also not to mention the copious amounts of jobs that will be available for some people in Ulan Bator to work at the Hilton hotel, for a very sturdy company, paying good wages for a secure job. Knowing how difficult it is to earn a substantial wage it is in Ulan Bator & how difficult it is to get a job that doesnt degrade or make a fool of you with the pay, I honestly think that a new Hilton hotel in Ulan Bator is a good idea. Its prosperous, will look nice & modern & will offer a great deal of opportunity to people. Like I say, Im biased, but if i was to visit Ulan Bator without having a friend there, I'd be far more confident & comfortable staying in a well known hotel. The only thing I have serious doubts about is... who will actually know it is there!!? Lots of advertising will be needed, & more direct flight connections to the airport is needed. It was an absolute nightmare & hellish journey to get from Newcastle where I live in the U.K, to Ulan Bator.. The reason that there are not so many visitors to Mongolia especially Ulan Bator, is because people know very little about the place, info is so hard to find unless on internet & specifically looking for it, & lots of pictures are needed to give people a feel of what it is actually like. I know that most people love cultural changes to their own & I know if there was plenty of advertising about Ulan Bator in England, Many English people would love to see it & Im sure as an unusual destination.. especially in the warmer months.. the tourism from Brits esp would boom.... Bring on the Hilton, also bring on a great big tourism in Ulan Bator & Mongolia advertising campaign. It will do a lot of good in the long run. Most of Mongolia is virtually unspoiled beautiful barron land & its breathtaking to a tourist, but why not ... in the city have a fast growing, fast paced very new & modern environment & development.. instead of staying in the stone age. The city must grow, to create opportunity. Brilliant idea. Thanx 4 reading. Clare.

Well, i think UB need high-end quality not the hotel it self. Why Hilton just buy the Chinggis Hotel's building and do a business in there. Also if they building new hotel, why they not to build in out side of the city, centertal UB is already full. there is no space in there.

HIlton hotel is completely not necessary. MOngolia does't need this human blood drinking hotel. HIlton will thrive on hardworking housekeeping workers tears and sweat. There is no place to cross the street. Why this bloodsucking HIlton comes to MOngolia and make riches more rich. We have plenty of Hotels. But the international chain Hotel completely not necessary to Mongolia. Thus go to hell. Stay in your own place and become game of the HIltons. But not in MOngolia.

I can't quite understand why so many people are so negative about this great step of progress. Mongolians are known to be very hospitable, educated, fashionable and - as this page shows - fluent in English, the world's leading language. UB can be very proud to be associated with one of the world's best hotel management companies and I can assure you that Hilton will make a difference not only to UB's tourism but also to the city's social life. I strongly believe that this is a milestone and just a very small but significant beginning which will be leading Mongolia to a well deserved global recognition of its natural beauty and the amazing people. But folks we must accept change and development and be open and positive for better things in life. Very warm welcome to Hilton and congratulations to those who made this possible!

It is a big chance for Mongolia and its people to get a recognition around the world and it will help Mongolia to advertise its country via Hilton. Therefore Hilton will attract a lot of tourists from people around the world. Most of all it will definitely help Mongolian unemployed people and will give a chance to survive in a fast and competing country like Mongolia. As for McDonalds and Starbucks, who needs those poisining craps it just all about the names whenever people hear about these two they go wow, fuck these two we Mongolians have to keep up the traditional meal. I highly do not recommend these two it is a big health risk. Apology for my misuse of word. Thank you, May the country of Mongolia be well known and powerful that it used to be back in Chingghis Khan's times.
