Fire from Russia destoys forests in Mongolia PDF Print E-mail

Mongolia has been hit by a fire that has destroyed large areas of forests and pasture land. The fire came from the territory of the Russian Federation to the Mongolian Khovsgol Aimag on April 21, 2006, taking more than 15 days to extinguish. The fire was reached the area of several soums (districts) of the Khuvsgul province, including the Dadal, Binder, Bayan-Adar, and Norovlin soums.

No victims have been reported, but severe damage was caused to the area. According to the preliminary estimation of the damage, 110 million togrog worth material stuff burnt in the fire, and a total of 15 million togrog was spent on the fire extinguishing.

According to Montsame News Agency the flames destroyed
  • gers (traditional dwelling) of four families,
  • 580 cubic meters wood prepared on a mountain, houses of 30 families,
  • 48 livestock fences,
  • 30 tons of hay,
  • 32 camels, horses, and cattle,
  • about 600 technical spare parts of motor vehicles,
  • 170 sown saplings,
  • 140 hectares of forest, and
  • 90 thousand hectares of livestock pasture.

Altogether, it makes 870 million togrogs damage. A total of 54 firemen with four motor vehicles of the Aimag Emergency Department, 870 people and 70  "means of transportion"  of the above soums more or less suffered from the fire.
