Tsagaan sar January 29-31 |

This year the Tsagaan Sar, Lunar New Year, will be celebrated from January 29 to 31. The 29th is Bituun (the Eve of Tsagaan Sar) ,which means according to the lunar calendar this day is the last day of the last month of winter. This coincides with the last day of the Year of the Rooster. The next day, January 30th, is Shiniin negen which is the first day of first month of spring as well as the first day of Year of the Dog.  If you happen to be in Mongolia this time, prepare yourself to eat
a lot of food. A few days before the event people slaughter the sheep
with most fat and thebiggest tail and steam it untill it is done. It is
called bituuleg and put on the head of the table. Another dish
that is presented is the Ul Boov the traditional long molded flat
biscuit stacked in an odd number of rows symbolizing good fortune and
abundance. Also at this time people make hundreds and hundreds of
steamed buuz dumplings . Airag (fermented mare's milk) and traditionally made vodka called nermel arkhi will be served as well.
The evening of the Bituun usually family members gather together and eat until you stuffed.The morning
of the Shiniin Negen children visit their parents and younger people
give their respect to older generations and greet with them which the
so-called zolgokh, a traditional way of greeting . In these
days people show their respect by visit and greet the elders, expended
family members and friends . The holiday with the many greetings can
last for over a month.
