In Ulaanbaatar closed Peace Bridge causes traffic problems PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 July 2006
Mongol Messenger reports:
The Peace Bridge was closed the day after Naadam for renovation, causing traffic jams on Gurvaljin Bridge and surrounding roads.
On July 17 Ulaanbaatar Mayor Ts. Batbayar and general manager G. Monkhbayar inspected progress of work carried out by Ulaanbaatar city staff before the Chinese workforce from Hunan province took over. The Peace Bridge was built with Chinese funding in 1963, and this is the first complete renovation since then, the mayor and Chinese Ambassador Gao Shumao signing an agree- ment on March 5 for the funding of 19 million yuan.
Mongolia is to provide the Chinese executor water and heat and re-route the traffic for the renovations, which are scheduled for completion on April 12, 2007.
The first stage is scheduled for completion by September, after which the bridge will carry only one-way traffic until April.

The closing of the bridge is indeed causing increased trafiic jams it the often already gridlocked city. All traffic is now routed over the small Gurvaljin bridge south of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and over the Gandhi Avenue. During rush hour commuters from south of the bridge spent half an hour more to make it into town.
