Mongolian Athlete Becomes World Sumo Champion PDF Print E-mail

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. A Mongolian athlete U. Byambajav /+115 kg/ has become the World Amateur Sumo Champion. Byambajav has brought the World Champion title to his homeland after a eight years break. More than 180 athletes from 27 teams of 38 countries took part in the World Amateur Sumo Championship held in Osaka, Japan. A Japanese student - Yokuzuna Takayuki - won the bronze medal in the +115 kg weight category. The Mongolian athlete R. Gantogs /-115 kg/ who is studying at high school in Japan, also won a bronze medal. The team of Mongolian male athletes as a whole fulfilled the conditions to gain a bronze medal among 27 teams. A Mongolian female sumo wrestler S. Enkhzaya won a bronze medal at the female team competitons. In 1998, the Grand Champion of the Mongolian national wrestling, A. Sukhbat first ever won the World Champion title.
