Montsame reports on a dramatic increase in livestock in Mongolia. The increase might contribute negatively to existing environmental problems as overgrazing.
According to preliminary results of the 2006 livestock census, a number
of livestock of Mongolia has reached 34.48 million heads. It is the
greatest number reached in the history since the 1924. In 1999, 33.6
million heads of livestock were counted in Mongolia, reported
L.Byambatseren, Head of National Statistical Office, at a press
conference held on Friday. This year, the number of livestock increased
by 4.1 million heads or 13.4 percent compared to the previous year. All
aimags, except Dornogobi, bred their livestock by 2.5 - 24.0 percent
more against 2005. Nine aimags such as Arkhangai, Bayankhongor,
Gobi-Altai, Zavkhan, Uvs, Khovd, Khovsgol, Darkhan-Uul and Orkhon and
the Ulaanbaatar City equally reared five kinds of livestock--sheep,
goat, horse, cattle and camel. The number of livestock of Dornogobi
province dropped by 26.6 percent compared to the previous year because
of an increase of miscarriage and infertility of breeding female
livestock and of decline by 152,7 thousand in a number of new-born
beasts. A number of camels reduced either by 1.6 thousand compared to
2005, the number of horses, cattle, sheep and goats was added by 74,5,
187,1, 1787,1 and 2037,8 thousand heads, respectively. The number of
goats jumped the most. The National Statistical Office specialists
consider that final results of census will show 35 million heads.
