The Toll of Population Increase in Mongolia PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 26 March 2007
In last year about 6700 children were born in the 1th maternity home. Which brings the levels of births back to that of the 1970s. In that period there were enough doctors, nurses and space for the mothers. Since 1990 childbirth decreased in Mongolia because of economic difficulties, during which time the maternity home scaled down using some of the buildings for other use, and decreasing the number of beds. But now it is changing, childbirth is increasing and maternity homes are working under hard pressure. Since the beginning of this year about 1500 mothers gave birth, probably leading to more than 7000 new babies by the end of this year. But the capacity of the maternity homes not enough, the little staff is exhausted with the large amount of work:

"Every hour there a mother is giving birth. This year will be very busy this year we think, also because it is the auspicious day of the Golden Pig, something that happens only once in sixty years. People believe that if a child is born, he or she will be great person. This is people talking about this years, maybe that is why the childbirth is increasing even more this year" said one of the doctors from 1th maternity home.

" On top of all this the Mongolian government actively promotes to increase the population, there are several programs implemented, including MNT 500.000 support for just married people, and MNT 100.000 for a new born child. But if we really wants to increase population we need new maternity home. The authority's said they will built new maternity home in Songino Khairhan district which is a nice news and now on we will wait and see."

During the Stalinist purges of the 1930's almost every monastery in Mongolia was destroyed. In 1979 an atlas was published in Ulaanbaatar by Mr. Rinchen with an overview of more than 900 religious sites that used to exist in Mongolia. However a lot the information listed seems to be not accurate. A research has been initiated to get a better idea of all the buddhist buildings that once stood in Mongolia.
