The government convened an unscheduled cabinet session on Thursday to take actions following a sudden drop in world cashmere prices.

Cashmere is a major source of income for Mongolia’s goat herders.

Following discussions, it was decided to provide herders with an additional MNT 5000 per kilogram of cashmere to compensate herders for losses.

The compensation will be calculated based upon the number of goats per herdsman and on the basis of the livestock census conducted at the end of 2007.
