China and Mongolia have agreed to expand their cooperation in fighting the effects sandstorms pose to each country.

Following meetings in Ulaanbaatur last week between China's Meteorological Bureau and Mongolia's National Agency of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment Monitoring, both countries agreed to work together on this environmental problem.

Minutes from the meeting indicate the two countries intend to build three weather monitoring stations in Mongolia to monitor sandstorms and share data collected at these stations.

Evidence indicates that sandstorms originating in Mongolia’s southern deserts are a major source of disruption to China each year.

The alarming speed at which Ongi, Orhon, Onon rivers going waterless, expansion of the desert further north and more sand storms will require more than improved weather monitoring capacity by the two countries. Wait till Oyu Tolgoi goes into full swing mining. Chine and Mongolia (and other stakeholders in mining) should weigh all pros and cons of mining and its environmental impact. Dust from these storms have been reported to reach the west coast of the American constinent, proving its increasing global impact on the environment. High time for governemnts to coordinate activities of the right and left hands as well as appetities for mineral resources.
