An Australian zoo announced the successful birth of a rare Mongolian Przewalski's horse on Sunday.

Officials of the Adelaide Zoo in Adelaide, South Australia, said the white foal has been named “Effie,” after Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

Significantly, there are only 100 to 200 Przewalski's horses remaining in the wild in Mongolia. Within the zoo, this was the first successful birth since 2001.

"This is very exciting, it's something we were hoping for some time," Monarto Zoo senior curator Peter Clark told Australia’s Sunday Mail.

"There haven't been many born in the Australasian region in recent years. We are hoping for one more, another one is pregnant."
