Mongolia hopes to join Russia
to create a joint nature preserve in eastern Mongolia’s Amur basin.
Working with the World Wildlife
Federation and the Russian-Mongolian environmental committee, the group
will seek to save both the area’s wildlife and the Onon River.
Meeting in Ulaanbaatar, representatives
of environmental groups from Mongolia and Russia agreed that the preserve
must include special areas allowing for the free migration of the Mongolian
antelope.
In an unusual move, the group
considered the necessity of temporarily removing border fences in this
region to assure the movement of the antelope
Additionally, an initiative
for expanding the existing Daurskiy reserve was recommended. Group members
noted that the reserve is a habitat for species that are unique to the
region.
