In the Footsteps of Genghis Khan
Take an epic journey with photographer Gordon Wiltsie as he documents the semi-annual migration of nomadic herders in Mongolia. As they have for centuries, hundreds of families, every year, guide vast herds of cattle, yaks, camels, sheep, goats and horses across a snowbound, 10,000-foot (3,048-meter) mountain range to reach winter pastures. This picturesque but dangerous mass movement of people and animals has been repeated for generations, but with increasing globalization and economic development this spectacular migration may soon become a thing of the past. Wiltsie’s pictures of this journey have appeared in National Geographic magazine, and will be featured in the National Geographic Museum exhibition, "Mongolia: Traditions Reborn" (Feb. 10 – May 14, M Street Building).

FEB. 10-MAY 14: "MONGOLIA: TRADITIONS REBORN" The culture and traditions of the nomadic peoples living on the steppes of Asia are highlighted Feb. 10-May 14 at the National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall, 1145 17th St. NW. 202-857-7588.
