Only half the number of Mongolians applied for passports in 2008 as compared to 2007.

This was confirmed by M.Nyamsuren, head of the Foreign Passport Department of the State Civil Registration and Information Center.

"This could be the effect of the financial and economic crisis," Nyamsuren said.

Prior to 2008, 400-500 new passports were issued every day in Mongolia and during peak periods this number would go up to 800, according to officials.
