$2 million grant to fight malnutrition among children from ADB Mongolia

A $2 million international grant will be used to fight malnutrition among Mongolian children.

The grant will be provided by Japan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The money is to be used to provide food to children, mothers and pregnant women. The money will also support nutrition education and awareness campaigns in poor communities and to develop a training program for workers in the primary health care sector.

Observers believe that 20% of Mongolian children under age five are anemic, while anemia and Vitamin D deficiencies also affect a large number of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Over half of all breastfeeding mothers use substitute foods for their infants, such as gruel made from water and rice or flour which lack any nutritional value.

"The design and demonstration of successful approaches to delivering micronutrients will give the Ministry of Health tested models that it can use to carry out reforms and rationalization of health services," said Claude Bodart, Senior Health Specialist in ADB’s East Asia Department.
