Students receive English language scholarships

Twenty Mongolian students received scholarships on Monday to attend special English language classes in Ulaanbaatar.

Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, the classes are conducted outside of the regular school day. They are targeted at less privileged students who normally might not have the opportunity to study English.

A special focus of the program is to provide knowledge about U.S. society, arts, culture, sports, and customs.

Some 200 students in Mongolia have previously received scholarships for the English language program.

New Mongolian atlas presented to President

Soyombo Mongolian National EmblemOn Tuesday, President N.Enkhbayar was presented with the newly published national atlas of Mongolia.

Some 120 scholars contributed to the atlas, which includes 256 illustrations.

At the ceremony with the President, the atlas was presented by president of the Academy Sciences (AS) B.Chadraa; academician D.Dorjgotov, a director of the AS's Geographical Institute; J.Oyungerel, a secretary of the Geographical Institute; Dr. S.Shiirev-Adya, a manager of the Geographical Institute's laboratory.

Figures released on Mongolian HIV/AIDS cases

The government has released figures on the number of HIV/AIDS cases in Mongolia.

Kh.Davaajav, the head of the AIDS service of the National Center for Infectious Disease Studies, said the 51st and 52nd HIV/AIDS cases were registered in Mongolia last week.

Of the 52 cases registered in recent years, 40 infected people were men and 12 were women. Three of these patients are 15-19 years old, 23 are 20-29 years old, 16 are 30-39, seven are aged 40-49, and one is over 50 years.

Eight people have died from this group.

Mongolian students receive laptop computers

Some 281 students of the 3rd secondary school of Arvaikheer soum of Ovorkhangai aimag have received laptop computers.           

The computers have been provided to the children in the second to fifth grades as part of the "One Laptop Per Child" program carried out under the sponsorship of the President of Mongolia. 

Previously, Mongolian children in Kharkhorin soum received laptops.

Today, nearly 25,000 children study in 29 secondary schools in Ovorkhangai province.

New maternity hospital to be built in Ulaanbaatar

Construction will begin this spring on Ulaanbaatar’s fourth maternity hospital.

 

Officials believe it will take two years to complete construction of the 120 bed hospital. It is to be located in Yarmag's new residential area in Khan-Uul district.         

Officials said the new maternity hospital would be built to international standards. 

Since 1998 the nation’s birth rate has doubled, creating the need for an additional hospital.
