In a meeting held last week, the Health Minister met with the heads of the nation’s health departments to review activities in the health sector.
During the meeting, Health Minister S.Lambaa insisted that health services of the highest quality be made easily available to the public.
He also said that there had been little government investment in science in general, and health care in particular, during the past 20 years. Thus there are few up to date medical laboratories and the country’s medical staff are in need of higher wages.
Some 600 scientists are employed in the health sector, though only nine institutes conduct medical research. These include the Medical Institute, the Institute of Public Health, the Scientific Center for Mothers and Infants, the Center for Infectious Diseases Studies, the University of Health Sciences, and the "Ach" Institute. Together, they employ 428 scientists
The government budgeted MNT 368.9 million in 2008 for these institutes. In 2009, 38 scientific projects and research programs will be conducted in the country.
