The Itgel Foundation seeks short-term research assistant

The Itgel Foundation is seeking a short-term Research Assistant/Translator for a trip next month to Hovsgol aimag. We are seeking a fluent Mongolian/English speaker with an interest in one or more of the following disciplines: veterinary medicine, biology, animal husbandry, agriculture, health. Students are encouraged to apply.

 

The position will involve assisting one of Itgel's visiting research scientists on a trip to Tsagaan Nuur soum, Hovsgol aimag to work with the Tsaatan and Darhad communities on an ongoing health project investigating tick-borne diseases, zoonotic disease transmission, and human-animal health trends. Ideal candidates should meet the following qualifications:

 

  • Excellent English and Mongolian language abilities and oral translation experience
  • Background or interest in one of the disciplines named above
  • Ability to travel in the countryside for up to 1 month, in challenging conditions
  • Ability to ride a horse for up to 10 hours per day
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude
  • Full-time availability between April 15 and May 17, 2009.

america center for mongolia studiesThe American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS) is seeking a Resident Director for its Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia office. The ACMS is a non-profit, non-governmental educational organization that supports the development of Mongolian Studies and academic exchanges with Inner Asia. The ACMS is a member of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) with primary funding from the US government, private foundations and member institutions and individuals. The ACMS defines Mongolian Studies to include all academic fields as they relate to Mongolia and the Inner Asian region.

The ACMS Resident Director is responsible for the management of the ACMS Ulaanbaatar office, staff and programs, and the development of new programs, partners and funding sources. The position is primarily administrative, but requires an ability to work effectively with international and Mongolian academic institutions, scholars and students. Experience in the US higher education system through study or work and experience working or studying in Mongolia or Inner Asia is required.

The position is salaried and full-time, with a basic housing and benefit allowance. Short-term research and personal leaves are negotiable.

The responsibilities of the ACMS Resident Director include:

  • Overseeing the financial accounting and management of the ACMS operations in Mongolia, including management of the ACMS staff;
  • Development and oversight of ACMS programs in Mongolia, including the ACMS library, intensive Mongolian language program, fellowships, internships, speaker series, conferences and other initiatives;
  • Facilitating the research activities of international scholars and students in Mongolia, including providing logistical support, helping locate partner institutions and scholars in Mongolia, and helping to disseminate research and experiences both locally and internationally;
  • Maintaining a friendly, cooperative and productive relationship with the US Embassy and other international organizations in Ulaanbaatar and seeking ways to develop scholarly programs and exchanges in cooperation with these organizations;
  • Building relationships and programs with Mongolian academic institutions, scholars and students;
  • Writing and editing publications including the ACMS newsletter, promotional materials, grant proposals and reports;
  • Oversight of the ACMS website and on-line programs and resources;
  • Developing new programs and projects.

Qualifications for the position include:

  • A Masters Degree is required, a PhD preferred
  • Experience living, working or studying in Mongolia or Inner Asia
  • A graduate degree or teaching experience at a US university
  • Administrative and managerial experience strongly recommended
  • Financial accounting experience preferred
  • Mongolian language ability preferred
